I’m just a visitor (Japan)

A series of site specific performances
in Megijima and Kyoto
resulting in an exhibition at
Design Festa Gallery, Tokyo
2013

Welcome.

During an all day performance and
installation piece, Tuuli Manninen
is sharing some of the material she
gathered during her first two weeks
in Japan. The material consists of
sound recordings, fictional ritual
practices and insects. The three
themes depicted in the rituals are
tiredness, death and language.

Production of text and rituals
continues through-out the day with
the help of visitors. You are welcome
to participate in the rituals based on
a foreigner's experiences of everyday
life in Japan. Please explore the space
freely.

パフォーマンスアーティスト

トゥーリ＝マンニネンさんの展示会が行われております。

ロンドン大学で都市研究を行っている彼女は、笑顔の素敵なフィンランド人。
今回のテーマは、２週間日本に滞在した彼女が見た/感じた日本の風景を共有すること。この、「共有」に関してですが
普段私たちが感じている日本の風景と、
トゥーリさんが感じた日本の風景では感じ方に差異が現れて当然です。
トゥーリさんは日本の外からの視点で日本の風景を見たわけです。
日本の外からの視点で見た「日常の風景」を私たちと共有しようという試みです。

古い写真を細く刻んでいます。

切れ切れに見える人物は、血縁者でしょうか。

先祖への一言を添えます。

こうして文面にして何かメッセージを書いたことはありませんでした。

不思議な感覚に陥りながら筆を走らせました。

京都と女木島へ行った際のパフォーマンス写真の展示もございます。

日本人は沢山働くから、疲れてるのでは。

休んで下さいという文字。

この下には、椅子と、枕と、アイマスクがそっと置かれていました。

日本滞在時の記録と、アイデア。

大掛かりな仕掛けもなければ、費用も殆どかけていません。

セミの１週間。
日本人の疲れ。
先祖への一言。突如として現れた繊細な問いかけに、
ふいに上着を脱がされるような恥ずかしさを覚えながら答えました。

展示物に特別なものは何ひとつありません。

むしろ私たち日本人にはごく身近なものです。

トゥーリさんが私たちと共有しようとしたものは

私たちが忘れている「何か」なのかもしれません。

今後の彼女の活動にも注目です。
